Kidney stones are hard deposits formed due to an excess of minerals and salts inside the kidney. The kidneys are located on each side of your spine below the ribcage. If these become lodged in the ureter, these can cause the kidney to swell, resulting in pain and discomfort.

Lack of fluid intake

The most common risk factor for developing kidney stones is an inadequate amount of fluid intake. Deficient water intake can make the urine too concentrated and increase the risk of crystallising and concentration of calcium.

Presence of Oxalate in the diet

Foods like broccoli, chocolate, nuts and spinach are rich in oxalates. Excessive consumption of such foods can result in the formation of calcium oxalate stones in the urine.

Family history

If you have a relative or any family member who has a history of developing kidney stones, then you are at an increased risk of developing them.

Calcium supplements

A regular and balanced intake of calcium is good for the healthy development of bones. But if you are taking supplements for calcium, it may make you more prone to developing kidney stones.

Diabetes and Obesity

If you are obese or have Type 2 diabetes or both, then you may be more prone to developing kidney stones as these medical conditions can change the composition of your urine.

High sodium consumption

Having a diet that is high in salt can make you more at risk of developing kidney stones as salt has a high sodium content. This high sodium content increases the calcium concentration in the urine.

Animal protein 

Red meat produces acid in the kidney, which results in an increase in the amount of calcium in the kidneys, leading to kidney stones. Animal protein also causes acidic urine that can lead to uric acid kidney stones.
